This week was all about rhymes and riddles as we kicked off our two week 'Let's Pretend' unit. We pulled out the classic nursery rhymes, finger plays and fairytales. Here's a closer look at what we did ...
READING:
The highlight of our week, by far was all our Humpty Dumpty Fun! We read it, found rhyming words in it, counted words in it, and wrote silly rhymes like it with our own name in it. On Thursday the class learned how to "Think Like a Scientist" as we sought to help poor Humpty with his falling 'problem.' You see we know Humpty and we know that he likes to sit up on walls. Well it is pretty obvious that if he is going to be up on a wall, chances are he is going to fall. So as a class we tried to answer the question, What if Humpty had some protection from his fall? We realized that we use protection all the time, from bike helmets and shin guards to umbrellas and sunscreen. What could protection could we give Humpty to keep him from breaking?
Your young scholars brainstormed and A-MAZ-ING list of materials to you. They came up with feathers, marshmallows, water, sand, play-doh, and bubble-wrap. Their ideas truly blew us away. So much more creative then I would have ever thought of on my own! Then we set out to test our ideas. In groups they filled a small ziplock bag with their protective material of choice. I added a raw Humpty Dumpty egg. Then we went out and dropped them off the wall. What protection worked the best?? Ask your young scholar!! And don't forget to check our shutterfly site for pictures of the whole experience which will soon be posted!
